A little bit about me
I am a current medical student (MD/PhD) at the University of British Columbia (Class of 2026). I grew up in China and came to Canada during high school. Before medical school, I completed my undergrad at UBC in Honours Physiology (CAPS). I also did the Science One program in my first year of undergrad. Why did I start this blog?
When I first had the idea that I wanted to pursue medicine, I had no clue that getting into medical school was a competitive process. It was not until university that I realized how competitive and daunting the process was. I found myself being sucked into a vicious cycle of stress that was caused by comparing myself to my peers, comparing myself to random “premed” information that I read online, blaming myself for the things I did or did not do, blaming myself for being “behind” in the game, and the list goes on and on…
I realized that I was not the only person who was affected by this cycle of uncertainty and insecurity when I had the opportunity to TA undergrads who also wanted to pursue medicine. The questions they asked me were very similar to those I had when I was preparing myself for medical school.
Therefore, I am writing this blog to:
Hopefully encourage a less competitive and more collaborative “premed” culture.
Share resources that I found useful.
Reflect on my experiences before (and during) medical school.
